Wootton Youth Project was established in April 2005 as a result of significant investment from Wootton and East Hunsbury Parish Council. The Parish Council fund Spurgeons Child Care to employ a part time youth co-ordinator called Denise Clarke, and a part time youth worker Ruth Timms. Denise’s contact details can be found at the end of the article. The Parish Council also provides the accommodation, leisure and recreational resources such as the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and the administrative support for the project. In addition to the core investment in the service the Parish Council raises funds at their local events such as the recent Walk in The Park event this July. The project operates from the Wootton Community and Sports Centre situated on Curtlee Hill in Wootton.
Recent events
With regard to the Walk in the Park event planned for next year, the project under the direction of its Co-ordinator is hoping to have an even greater presence for youth next year and hope to support young people to deliver performances e.g. dance and music, to support the promotion of the event e.g. marketing and PR. If you are interested in taking part in the event then please contact Denise.
Approach and Delivery
‘Young people have a major role to play in strengthening communities’ (The National Youth Agency)
At Wootton Youth Project we believe that youth work is a process which:
-
Promotes learning and development
-
Enables young people to try out new opportunities and experiences
-
Works to empower young people
-
Supports young people to be creative, active and participate within their community
-
Identifies the needs of young people
Supporting the Project
If you would like to support this project by offering your time as a volunteer or an in-kind contribution such as share a skill or expertise you would be more than welcome. Please give Denise a call to find out more. Also if you would like information or advice on any issue that affects young people please pop along to the Info Point session on Fridays from 6pm until 7pm and have a look through our range of leaflets and talk to a youth worker.
