A45 Footbridge Proposal

The parish Council held a two and a half hour meeting with the Highways Agency on Wednesday 16th July, during which Councillors pushed for answers to the questions that local residents have raised regarding the proposed footbridge.  The Parish Council’s official position remains that, whilst it welcomes the fact that significant money is being made available to improve the safety of crossing the A45 between Wootton and Blacky More, it believes that alternatives including improvements to the existing bridge would provide a far more effective and satisfactory course of action.  The Parish Council sought, and was given, an assurance that nothing further would happen following the end of the consultation period (which finishes on 31st July 2008) without further discussion with local representatives including the Parish Council.

A Walk In the Park 2008 - The Best Yet!

“Never forget where you’ve come here from” rang out into the Wootton Recreation Ground night from the hugely popular Take That 2 tribute band. With an estimated 8,000 local people attending the free festival on Saturday, it is unlikely that they will forget the event of the South Northampton calendar.

The day started with around 60 runners participating in a 1 mile charity fun run in aid of the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (organised by the Wootton Road Runners). Local music acts entertained throughout the day with music to suit everyone from the Rushden Town Band to the Pirates of the Nene. Later, tribute bands Breathe and Take That 2 led the musical bill into the evening. Take That 2 stated “it’s our best ever gig. We walked onto the stage with our hoods over our heads. As soon as we looked up we were surprised by the number of cheering people. We were lost for words”.

Advice and products to help reduce energy bills were provided at the Environmental Zone, with the parish Carbon Drop initiative featuring prominently. Displays from the Northamptonshire emergency services, local primary and secondary schools, stands by the Girl Guides and WI, a Victorian fair and a farmers market, ensured a fun packed and educational day was had by all.

A separate arts and culture marquee, run by Mereway Community College, provided another chance for local talent to be showcased: the wide range of skills displayed, from DJing to African drumming proved very popular throughout the day.

Jonathan Nunn, Chairman of the Parish Council said, “We are thrilled by the support from the parish for this event. All the positive comments and the happy faces I’ve seen as a result of Walk In the Park has made all the hard work required worthwhile. On behalf of the Parish Council, I also wanted to say a very big thank you for the time, effort and hard work by all of the people involved. There are far too many people to mention, as so many groups from throughout the community played an important part, from assisting in the preparation work, performing, running the many stalls, to those who joined the Parish Council to help clear up after the event on the rainy Sunday morning.”

This year’s Walk In The Park was the best event to-date and The Parish Council wants local people’s input now to make the 2009 event even better as the planning starts today. You can contribute by attending the Parish Council’s monthly meetings, contacting the Parish Office on 01604 705055 or e-mailing parish.clerk@woottonpc.co.uk.

Environment Agency to talk about Wootton Brook flood defences

The Environment Agency will be giving a presentation to the parish council meeting on 20th February about the standard of the flood defences along Wootton Brook. The Agency confirmed last year that some parts of Wootton are only protected to a 1 in 10 year standard.

With Wootton Consortiums' plans to build 4,000 - 5,000 new homes surrounding Wootton, Hardingstone and Grange Park councillors will be keen to hear what plans the agency has to improve the flood defences.

Village Green

Northampton Borough Council have confirmed that they will replace the trees that were removed from the Village Green in Green Lane. The mature horse chestnut trees were removed in 2002 when they were found to be suffering from bleeding canker.

The trees are to be replaced by either sweet chestnut or London plane trees during the next planting season which runs from September through to December.
