A Walk In the Park 2008 - The Best Yet!

“Never forget where you’ve come here from” rang out into the Wootton Recreation Ground night from the hugely popular Take That 2 tribute band. With an estimated 8,000 local people attending the free festival on Saturday, it is unlikely that they will forget the event of the South Northampton calendar.
The day started with around 60 runners participating in a 1 mile charity fun run in aid of the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (organised by the Wootton Road Runners). Local music acts entertained throughout the day with music to suit everyone from the Rushden Town Band to the Pirates of the Nene. Later, tribute bands Breathe and Take That 2 led the musical bill into the evening. Take That 2 stated “it’s our best ever gig. We walked onto the stage with our hoods over our heads. As soon as we looked up we were surprised by the number of cheering people. We were lost for words”.
Advice and products to help reduce energy bills were provided at the Environmental Zone, with the parish Carbon Drop initiative featuring prominently. Displays from the Northamptonshire emergency services, local primary and secondary schools, stands by the Girl Guides and WI, a Victorian fair and a farmers market, ensured a fun packed and educational day was had by all.
A separate arts and culture marquee, run by Mereway Community College, provided another chance for local talent to be showcased: the wide range of skills displayed, from DJing to African drumming proved very popular throughout the day.
Jonathan Nunn, Chairman of the Parish Council said, “We are thrilled by the support from the parish for this event. All the positive comments and the happy faces I’ve seen as a result of Walk In the Park has made all the hard work required worthwhile. On behalf of the Parish Council, I also wanted to say a very big thank you for the time, effort and hard work by all of the people involved. There are far too many people to mention, as so many groups from throughout the community played an important part, from assisting in the preparation work, performing, running the many stalls, to those who joined the Parish Council to help clear up after the event on the rainy Sunday morning.”
